Easter atoll is a tiny Chilean atoll in the southern Pacific Ocean. The island is one of the most remote locations on the planet, located at the southeastern tip of Oceania’s Polynesian Triangle. The triangle outline of the island is created by three inactive volcanoes, the Poike, Rano Kau, and Terevaka. (the highest mountain on the island). Only a few places on its craggy coastlines view the ocean, and its interior is very desolate and rolling. Rapa Nui is another traditional term for this island. The Dutch adventurer Jacob Roggeveen found it on Easter Day 1722.

This picture contrast from Sentinel-2 (optical Sensor) over Easter Island demonstrates the various findings received with the multispectral bands Sentinel-2 provides. The island is renowned throughout the globe for its mysterious stone sculptures of volcanic origin known as Moai. Easter Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, with much of the island preserved within Rapa Nui National Park. On the island, approximately 100 sculptures range in height from 3 to 12 meters. They are enormous figures with enlarged ears and faces carved from tuff, a porous volcanic rock. Material for the sculptures was sourced from the Rano Raraku caldera, where contemporary researchers discovered an enormous incomplete monument measuring 21 meters (68 feet). Many of the sculptures on the grave platforms wore red basalt crowns with cylinder brims; the biggest crown weighed roughly 27 kilograms.
We hope to demonstrate the wide range of applications that the Copernicus Sentinel satellite family can cover with this display of pictures acquired by Sentinel-2 (optical sensing instruments).
