The program for National Police Week 2023 is constantly being revised.
National Police Week provides an opportunity for law enforcement, survivors, and residents to assemble and pay tribute to those who have died in the line of duty.
- HISTORY
President John F. Kennedy issued a decree in 1962 designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding that date as Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officials from around the globe are currently gathering in Washington, DC to take part in a number of scheduled activities honoring those who have made the final sacrifice. The Memorial Service started in 1982 with a meeting of roughly 120 survivors and advocates of law enforcement in Senate Park. Decades later, the event, now known as National Police Week, has evolved into a series of activities that annually draw thousands of witnesses and law enforcement officials to our nation’s capital. The National Peace Officers Memorial Service is one of several events sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, including the Candlelight Vigil sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors.
