Holiday Season/Holiday Block Leave

Except for Christmas and New Year’s days off and specific training holidays, the armed services normally stay operational (half or full-day schedule dependent on mission needs) throughout the two weeks around the end-of-year holidays.

Army “Christmas Exodus”

Typically, the Army closes basic training and advanced individual training schools. The Navy and Air Force routinely close employment schools but not basic training.

The 10-day holiday usually begins a week before Christmas and ends a week after Christmas. Drill sergeants and basic training staff members may spend the Christmas with their family thanks to the “exodus.”

During the 10-day period, soldiers may opt to take a vacation and return home, or they can remain at basic training and concentrate on details. According to a 2014 statement from the US Army Future Soldier Center, any leave taken is deducted from troops’ leave entitlement, and transportation expenses home and back are not paid.
