One day is ENOUGH!
Due to road closures, there is a lot of traffic. Using Uber? Expect a two-hour bumper-to-bumper wait when it should just take half an hour… I left an hour in advance. Expect to park a long distance away. Prepare to stroll. You’ll get there quicker if you walk! And after you get at your destination, prepare to walk even further!!! The entrance point is absurd! Golden Boys earn a lot of money. They must repair the entry way. RIDICULOUS! Be prepared for aching feet and probable blisters. Fantastic painters. However, two to three people may play at the same time. Then you have to decide who to watch, and each person can only perform one song. In addition, no payment is taken by the food sellers. Estimate $12 to $20 per food or beverage item. Best wishes! Enough for one day!

Coachella is quite an experience…
Empire Polo Club – Indio
Traffic was insanity.
Arrival was madness.
The desert is intense.
Showers were horrible…get in line early (if not, bottled water is required) or bring your own!
I loveeeeeed it all.
I loved being immersed in music madness 24/7!
Dance all day long!
Take a nap. But not for too long!!!
The layout could be improved.
Remember where you camped!
Do not try to locate your tent when inebriated, alone, or at night. You won’t find it!
Experience as much as possible.
Go as many times as you can!

Saturday 16th April
* A day packed with squabbles. #1 12:50 or 12:55: Francis and The Lights The Powerful Joy. I was eager to see both of them. On Thursday, I was listening to our Coachella playlist on shuffle and had to check out a beautiful song by a band I couldn’t identify again – both times it was Francis and The Lights, so the Americans won again, and we’ll check out the Welsh female headed group when we get home.
* 12:50 Francis and The Lights outside. Sunny Saturday is off to a terrific start. Another great frontman with a great voice. Summer sounds with a light cheerful guitar lead. ‘Darling, It’s Alright’ stood out. We got into the Gobi for what I guess was ‘Whirring’ by The Joy Formidable, on our way to a cold Heinekein. I haven’t seen an angrier guitarist since Weller. I’ve never seen a female guitarist play like that. Three classic pieces. Stage left and side on for the drummer. Wendy James, the spit of Transvision Vamp, is the female lead vocalist/guitarist. I’ll surely see them when they return home; they may be this year’s Band of Skulls.
* 2:10 Mojave: Whales on the loose. I decided to check these individuals out since we had a gap in our Coachooser. We didn’t linger long.
* 3:15 p.m. Mojave: Foals. I’d been anticipating this one for a while, having watched a few videos of the band on NME tv. They were rather nice. Chiming guitars in abundance, reminiscent of The Joshua Tree. They reminded me of Temper Trap last year, not in terms of sounds, but in song structure (huge prolonged ends) and aesthetically, despite the fact that there aren’t many beardy frontmen out there. (see tomorrow for The National). The finest live tune was “Spanish Sahara.”
* 5:20 p.m.: Cage The Elephant’s name. Mental. We saw the finish of their show in the Mojave in 2009, and the vocalist crowd surfed all the way to the mixing station. This year, I’d compare them to a mix of a Nirvana tribute band and the Olympic diving squad. The musician donned a crimson gown and gave it his all. He was seldom seen outside of the crowd. Amps and voices were warped into tunes with a single goal in mind: noise central. Musically and aesthetically, it was disjointed. Bodies were pouring in from all sides. They closed with two memorable hits, “Shake Me Down” and “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked.” Wicked!
* 6:05 The Broken Social Scene is the main stage. We heard this band but didn’t see them since we were laying star-shaped to the back of the Main Stage Area, facing the blue sky. The globe passed by as balloon chains formed a line and then dove and plunged in the air. Music that was really relaxed back, perfect for what seemed like the warmest portion of the day. ‘All To All’ was fantastic and seemed to last forever. They were a lot of fun for me.
* Conflicts number two, three, and four. It was simple to skip Elbow at 7:30 (take your hands out of your pockets Garvey) and Mumford and Son (Radio Scotland’s Sunday evening folk hour) at 8:30, but even so, we could only witness two bands from The Kills, Electric Touch, One Day As A Lion, and Shpongle between 7.30 and 9pm. Shpongle were dismissed on the grounds that guitar music would always triumph over dance music, and The Kills were dropped on the grounds that Alison Mosshardt couldn’t possibly be as excellent (and potentially much more unstable) than she was with Jack White’s Dead Weather Organization last year. Furthermore, we wanted to get closer to one of our 2009 discoveries, our favorite new band from the mandolin string capital of the United States. The Electric Touch. We didn’t have to worry about getting trapped in the middle of the Gobi for Austin’s best.
* 7.35 Gobi: Touch Electric. The reaction of the crowd was shocking. As the band took the stage, I counted 30 individuals in the tent, four of whom were simply passing through. A re-enactment of their second Coachella in 2009. After Yelle ended, we battled our way to the front… and then it became lonely. I was so near to the stage that I couldn’t capture a photo of the whole band on the flip. Anyway, let’s get to the music. Because their music isn’t accessible in the UK, we purchased the first album at Coachella two years ago. It’s a banger, four-on-the-floor guitar rock’n’roll with an excellent English voice. After signing with Island in 2010, the band is set to release a new album this year. They really need the help of a record label. In a set of roughly 12 songs, ET only performed one song from the debut. The new material didn’t capture me as much as the last concert did, and I believe this is because to the inclusion of an additional guitar and two more backup voices, which makes the band seem a little frozen. Songs are ready to go, just add a stage and an audience. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the absence of a crowd tipped the scales. I’m still excited to hear the new album. (If it ever comes out). They’re hoping for additional support at Lollapalooza.
* 8.15 Mojave: A Lion’s Life. AKA Rage’s Zak De La Rocha, The Mars Volta’s drummer, and another guy fiddling knobs on what seemed to be a Moog. It sounded spicy, and it was. The tent was completely packed, and the audience was boppin in time for the most of the concert. Massive deep distorted grooves, brutally hard music. We witnessed around 35 minutes of a 45-minute show, which was about all we could manage. ‘Wild International’ is the best tune. Walking in after Electric Touch was like going from Palm Springs to rush hour in Philly in one minute.
* Animal Collective and Arcade Fire on the Main Stage, or Suede and Scissor Sisters in the Mojave, to cap the evening. Suede was a must-see since I hadn’t seen them in years and we had appreciated Brett Anderson’s solo performance last year. In addition, we’d seen Arcade Fire in December, and even though we’d seen Scissor Sisters 3 or 4 times before, what better location to see them again than Coachella?
* 10:40: Suede in Mojave. The last time I saw them was in 1999 at the V festival. I don’t recall the performance. I had previously seen them in 1994 at The Queens Hall in Edinburgh. Bernard Butler’s last job. He and Anderson were both disregarding and cursing at each other until Bernard stepped off stage. Anderson steps out 17 years later looking like Britpop was 17 months ago. Cousin keyboards filling in for Bassman since he couldn’t acquire a Visa – stick slim. Drummer with a slender stick. Richard Oakes, Bernard’s successor on guitar, was last seen as a teenager… wait… who ate all the pies? I spent the whole first song giggling at the guitarist. He may have gone 7 years without exercising, but he can still play pretty well. Suede were incredible. ‘Killing of a Flashboy,’ ‘Animal Nitrate,’ ‘Filmstar,’ ‘So Young,’ ‘We are the Pigs,’ ‘The Wild Ones,’ ‘The Beautiful Ones,’ ‘Trash,’ ‘Electricity,’ ‘She’s in Fashion,’ and many more. Throughout the event, Anderson whooped, stood up on the monitors, and cracked the microphone lead like a whip – audibly fantastic. As was the keyboard-less band. The 50-minute set flew by – amazing.
* 11:55 Scissor Sisters in Mojave. We stayed 5 rows back while the SS inflated big tubular balloons and let them drift into the throng. In an over-the-top concert, they performed a slew of new album tracks we didn’t know and didn’t realize we didn’t know them. The highlight was Filthy Gorgeous. We jumped in what could scarcely be called as a mosh pit. They perform bubblegum pop the way I like it, with some funk, rock, and lots of front.
